About Gwen
Gwen's practice focuses on the traditional methods of linocut printmaking. Her process consists of hand drawing and designing the image for the block on paper and transferring it to tracing paper and then working out the colours for the composition. Working out the colours for a print is the most time consuming. "I will use watercolour, gouache or coloured pencils to get the feel I want first on paper then I will try and replicate that into the process of the print. Sometimes, I change the colour as I go along. It is all intuitive and determined by my feelings at the time".
The reduction technique that she employs is slow and methodical. Using one linoleum block she carves and prints each colour separately until the print is completed. The block is 'reduced'. Registering the print each time for the new colour is crucial.
Gwen's has a passion for colour and narration. Her interests in classical mythology, the human form, animals, gardens & landscapes, textile design and her every-day surroundings provide endless inspiration for her work.
Gwen lives on the Mornington Peninsula in the state of Victoria, Australia.
